Founded on October 22, 1952 with 5 employees in a Berlin, CT backyard dairy barn, Royal Machine and Tool today has over 50 employees with three manufacturing facilities in Connecticut including more than 35 CNC machine tools.

Royal Machine & Tool's beginning became a reality in 1952 when the company was started as a tool grinding shop by John Ruscio, Joe DiBatitista, and Frank Marabelli.

For the next five years, Ruscio and DiBattista worked after hours and weekends for their new company and full time during the week for their employers. Ruscio worked as a grinder at New Britain Machine and DiBattista as a screw machine operator, first at New Britain Machine and then Goss & DeLeeuw. In 1957 they both resigned their positions to devote 100% of their efforts to their rapidly growing company.

In addition to Chuck Jaws for Multiple Spindle Chuckers, inital products were primarily for the Valve Industry. In 1959 the company received its first substantial order for chuck jaws from Detroit Controls in Stratford, CT. Royal Machine and Tool was now on its way.

As a result of increasing business and needs for additional personnel, machinery, and space, the company began a series of expansions.

building in 1962

In 1959 the company moved into a new building in Berlin which in 1962 was doubled in size and currently is the Grinding and Assembly Building. As business increased, Bridgeports, J&L Lathes and W&S lathes began to fill the newly expanded building.

In 1967 Royal opened its new 25,000 square foot corporate building on Willow Brook Drive in Berlin as its corporate headquarters and primary marketing/sales, design/engineering and manufacturing facility.

In addition to these two Berlin Facilities, the company has a third manufacturing facility in Southington, CT.

"As their business progressed, both my dad and Joe realized that the secret of any successful workholding company is to utilize its standard and custom design capabilities for contract machining as well as continually fulfilling its customers' needs, " Richard Ruscio, president and son of the late founder, recalls.

The philosophy has allowed Royal Machine & Tool to become competitive, not only in Workholding, but also as a Contract Machining provider.

The firm has continued to produce standard workholding devices ranging from simple manual fixtures to sophisticated hydraulic fixtures.

It designs and builds Chucks of all types for rotating and non-rotating applications including lever, wedge and screw-operated, self-centering, compensating, counter-centrifugal, manual indexing and automatic indexing.

In addition, Royal produces Multiple Spindle Drill Heads and Tapheads for machining centers and lathe applications.

In reviewing the company's history coupled with preparations for what lies ahead, Ruscio said, " In the future, the combination of over 50 years experience in designing and building our custom and standard workholding devices and our recently adding new services and equipment will make us even stronger in providing our customers quality finished products...and time-sensitive deliveries."

Recently added equipment and services to meet customers' ever-increasing options and needs include the addition of the new CNC turning technology, the expansion of Contract Machining Services, the acquisition of software to permit instant viewing of the complete Royal Workholding Fixtures and Chucks Catalogs on Computer CD's and a corporate website upgrading engineering Software to the latest in CD Capabilities and the accepting of Visa and MasterCard as means of shortening time-consuming corporate ordering procedures.
